€ 3 million for NWO call Food, Cognition and Behaviour

NWO has published the second call in the programme Food, Cognition and Behaviour, a joint initiative of the National Initiative Brain & Cognition (NIHC), the Medical Sciences division (ZonMw), the Earth and Life Sciences division (ALW) and the Social Sciences division (MaGW). Deadline for submitting a project idea is May 20, 2014. The funding instrument is intended for research into interactions between nutrition and humans: about healthy choices and healthy eating behaviour, and about the effects of nutrition on cognitive health.
Research into the interaction between nutrition and humans meets a need for such knowledge from industry and society. It also fits within the theme health of the Top Sector Agri & Food. NWO is therefore encouraging fundamental and precompetitive research in this area. In close consultation with industrial parties and scientific partners two themes have been formulated for this second funding round:

• The social, psychological, biological and neurocognitive mechanisms of food choice and eating behaviour;

• Mechanisms underlying the short- and long-term effects of food (ingredients) on cognitive development, cognitive health and cognitive performance.
There is a total budget of € 3,000,000 available. The call consists of two forms of projects, namely small short-term projects (6 to 18 months) and large long-term projects (2 to 5 years). The maximum grant for a small project is € 100,000. Large projects grants range from € 250,000 to € 1,000,000.
