Over € 5 million for 26 projects Free Competition Physical Sciences

The Division for Physical Sciences of NWO has awarded 26 research projects with a Free Competition grant. The closing date was September 18, 2012. Twelve applications concern a mathematical subject and nine a computer scientific subject. Five applications have been established by astronomers. The total available budget for this round was € 5 million. However the division and the assessment committee were very impressed by the high quality of the proposals, that they have decided to raise the budget to € 5.4 million. The Free Competition is intended for applications for innovative, risky fundamental research with a high-quality research question and scientific or practical urgency. Applications should be clearly significant for at least one of the disciplines astronomy, computer science or mathematics.
