NWO PhDs in the Humanities open for proposals

NWO invites proposals for the programme PhDs in the Humanities. Deadline for submitting applications is March 2, 2015. Only faculties involved in Sustainable Humanities can nominate PhD candidates, namely: Utrecht University, University of Amsterdam, University of Groningen, Erasmus University Rotterdam, VU University Amsterdam, Leiden University, Radboud University Nijmegen, Maastricht University, Tilburg University, Open University.

The total budget for the five rounds until the end of 2014 is € 18,975,000. A grant can be applied for to cover a standard PhD research project (4 years, 1 fte or 5 years, 0.8 fte) or a PhD position for a lecturer (5 years, 0.5 fte). The grant covers the personnel costs of the PhD. Material costs for research are remunerated to a limited extent.

The aim of the PhDs in the Humanities funding instrument is to increase the number of young talented researchers in the humanities, and to facilitate their progression on the academic career ladder. Two types of PhD position can be applied for, namely standard PhD positions and positions for lecturers who wish to do PhD research. Universities can also decide to allow students who have not completed a two-year research master, but are of a comparable level, to enter the programme.
